The O’Reilly’s Tools of Change for Publishing seeks to connect the people, companies, and organizations asking and answering the questions that will define the future of publishing. Recently, it held its annual O’Reilly TOC Conference in New York City, thus allowing those that are the driving force in publishing industry, including MagMe, to not only discuss but learn how to effectively adapt a future which no doubtably will be digital. Hence, many challenges loom for the publishing world as this digital revolution has meant smaller print circulation numbers and smaller revenues. As such, there is now need for interactivity, better quality information and accessibility, low cost and sleek presentation to succeed in this transformed industry and this precise urgency is where MagMe is poised to excel.

At the conference, I presented how MagMe’s unique business model, our advertising reseller platform and partnership with publishers has formed the foundation by which to increase profitability in times of transitional change. Currently, MagMe is undergoing beta testing and we have received tremendous feedback from many of our partnering publishers, who are indeed excited about our official launch on April 29, 2010. MagMe’s main take home message at the conference: In order for the publishing industry to dig itself out of the current mess, we need to combine the best of print properties (content and advertising) with the best of what the web has to offer (accessibility, cost and speed). We need to stop trying to monetize online content by producing online quality content and trying to match the relationship print advertising has with print content with online advertising and online content. It simply won’t work.

As expected, it was a very educating 3 day conference that allowed the different sectors of the publishing industry to learn, communicate new findings and network with each other. After all, the survival of the publishing industry largely depends on the players in the industry to work together and attend these conferences with an open mind rather than staying within our own individual publishing box.

Last night, my MagMe colleague Claudia Schmidt and I attended the Expo F5 Launch Party, held at the V-Lounge, located in the trendy Yaletown district in downtown Vancouver. Set to a backdrop of music, cocktails and delicious appies courtesy of the Earl’s Kitchen, we had a fantastic time mingling with other tech-biz personnel at the Online Mingle Session Viewing Room.

“It was interesting and it was great chance to mingle with other exhibitors who will be showcasing their products at the Expo convention,” said Claudia of the event.

The highlight of the night was of course Malcolm Gladwell’s Q&A session in which he spoke live from New York via satellite. All in all, the event was a hit and we can’t wait for the Expo.

Below are some links to reviews of the event and photos from the night:

Wow January has gone so fast! We’re near the end of the month already and it’s about time for another update. As you can see from our Events section, we’re getting ready to show our products and services to the world and make the MagMe name known! We’ll talk about our upcoming events in more details in another posting. Back to the reader, we’ve got the zoom-in setting, uploading function, sign-up form and commenting section all done this month and will be working on a number of things; including the all important tracking system, tagging and embedding system and reader customization feature just to name a few for the next couple of months or so.

We’re also creating an awesome user guide to make what we do even clearer for our readers and publishing partners. On top of that, we’re adding more informational tab to the website for easier navigation and information search. We’ve also got some really good constructive feedback from our publishing partners regarding the MagMe reader’s design and functionality – so we’ll be working hard to incorporate all the feedback to make sure we produce the best one there is.

So that is it for this edition of updates The tech team are busy programming, designing and coding while the rest of us here are running around closing deals, conversing with publishers and organizing plenty of media and promotional activities for the year ahead! As always, stay tuned for more news!

After 2 months of intense work behind the scenes, we’ve got an update for all of our fans and readers out there. The initial screenshots for the reader and library are now available. Take a peek, and tell us what you think. Just as a quick way to differentiate ourselves from the competition, all of our basic reader services are free for publishers to use, our pages smoothly slide to the right and left in under 0.75 seconds rather than flip, and our layout is crisp and clean to keep our branding to a minimum.

MagMe is very pleased to announce that we now exist! MagMe was recently incorporated, and was created with the intention of making magazines available for anyone to read, anywhere, at any time, for free. Over the next few months we’ll be taking time out from our incredibly busy “startup culture” schedules to keep you up to date on what we’re doing, why we’re doing it and how we intend to help the publishing industry regain their traditional revenue rates even as they move ahead with the transition from analog to digital.
